Biographies

Wendy Small, Head of Knowledge Management, Eversheds LLP

 

Wendy is Head of Knowledge Management for the international law firm, Eversheds LLP. Originally graduating in Information Management, Wendy went on to study law at Nottingham law school. She has worked in the legal sector for eighteen years, taking on the role of Head of Information Services for Eversheds in 2004, working with a team of 35 information professionals.

 

The Practice Lawyer, Business Development and Information teams have been aligned for some time within Eversheds and Wendy has worked with all of these teams to assist with the delivery of knowledge and information to both internal and external clients. In her new role as Head of Knowledge Management, she will be taking an holistic view of professional support across the business, aiming to ensure that the wide range of professional support skills available to the business are fully utilised and maximised in line with global strategy.

 

Wendy is also a regular guest speaker at the University of Sheffield where she teaches post-graduate students in Information Management on KM and marketing related topics. She has also delivered lectures at the College of Law for LPC students on legal research and KM in law firms.

 

Wendy won the award for City/National Knowledge Officer of the Year at the 2008 Legal Technology Awards and the Eversheds Information and Knowledge Services team was short-listed for the City/National Knowledge Team of the Year.

Lucy Dillon, Director of Knowledge Management, Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP

 

Lucy joined City law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP five years ago as their first Director of Knowledge Management. Prior to that, she was at City firm, Linklaters, both as a practising lawyer and as a Professional Support Lawyer in the firm's litigation department. In addition to the role of PSL, Lucy was central co-ordinator for the firm's PSLs.

 

At Berwin Leighton Paisner, Lucy is responsible for developing and implementing the firm's KM strategy and managing its KM processes. Lucy has been responsible for the redesign of the firm's award winning intranet and KM technology, a programme of improvements to the firm's precedent collection, the launch of a series of know-how initiatives for clients and expansion on the business intelligence offering from the library. Her team includes the PSLs and the library and she encourages lawyers from across the practice to participate in KM initiatives.

 

Lucy has an MBA in law firm management and is a regular speaker at KM conferences and has contributed articles to a number of legal, business and KM journals.

Catherine Flutsch, Head of Knowledge Management, Bird & Bird

 

Catherine joined Bird & Bird in February 2006 to become the Head of Knowledge Management. 

 

Catherine qualified as a solicitor in NSW, Australia in 1998 and until June 2004 was involved full-time on client work first at the Sydney office of Freehills and then at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in both their Tokyo and London offices. She specialised in IT and IP and had wide ranging experience in technology and IP driven corporate transactions and IT contracts.

 

She moved to the central knowledge management team at Freshfields where she gained extensive experience in the development and implementation of legal knowledge management strategy. The Freshfields KM team was runner up for the Knowledge Management Project award at the Information Management Awards 2005.

 

Catherine is active member of the knowledge management community, chairing and speaking at international knowledge management events. She is on the editorial board of journal KM Legal and is an advisory board member of the European Knowledge Management Thought Leaders' Forum. Catherine's team was a finalist at the British Legal Awards 2007 for the Best Use of Technology Award and she was runner up at the 2008 Legal Technology Awards for the International Knowledge Officer of the Year. On 31 January 2008, Catherine's team won the International Knowledge Management/Information Team of the Year Award at the Legal Technology Awards.

Ann Halpern, Director of Practice & Organisational Management, Norton Rose LLP

 

Ann has the rare combination of an academic background in law together with a successful career with one of the world's top law firms. Before moving into the commercial world, Ann had written widely in the areas of negotiation, contract and commercial law. Her book ‘Negotiating Skills' was a pioneering work in the field of professional skills training.

 

Ann is the Director of Practice and Organisational Management at Norton Rose, a leading international law firm that employs over 2000 staff worldwide with 24 offices in 20 countries, and in this role has had responsibility for leading the practice's drive for efficiency and innovative working techniques.

 

NavigatoR - the practice's new search engine - was highly commended in the 2008 Legal Technology Awards. It is the only search engine which allows a single search across a myriad of sources both internal and external and which integrates results, listing them according to relevance.

Julia Randell-Khan, Head of International KBD Development, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

 

Julia started her working life as a lawyer specialising in international banking and finance at Norton Rose. She joined Freshfields over 15 years ago to become one of their first Professional Support Lawyers in the Finance Department. She progressed to a strategic KM development role on revising the firm's KM strategy and KM programmes. This included building the KM teams and working with the firm's international offices on KM development programmes. Julia's current role involves the leadership of a team of international business development and KM professionals focusing on international business development for the firm's geographical regions and progressed to the promotion of knowledge and business development best practice across the firm's network of KM, BD and LIS professionals. One of the projects being developed by her team is a new international training and development programme for knowledge and business development staff across the firm's network.

David Halliwell, Chief Knowledge Officer, DLA Piper UK LLP

 

David is Chief Knowledge Officer for DLA Piper, the global legal services organisation.

 

He is responsible for the KM strategy for the European, Middle Eastern and Asian offices, and works alongside colleagues in the US to develop a global approach to knowledge management.

 

As the firm grows larger and more international, David's role is to help foster a local and international knowledge-sharing culture and to put in place the teams, systems and processes to support, enhance and integrate offices through KM.

 

He trained and practised as a litigation solicitor at Slaughter and May in the City of London and Paris, before moving into law firm knowledge management in 1999, working in the strategic IT development team at Wragge & Co, a major national UK law firm.

 

He joined DLA Piper in 2004 as Deputy Head of Knowledge Management. He has been in his current role since March 2006.

Matthew Parsons, Former CKO, Linklaters LLP, author of Effective Knowledge Management for Law Firms (2004) OUP, & co-author of KnowledgeThoughts.com

 

Until very recently, Matthew was the Chief Knowledge Officer for Linklaters LLP.

By background he is a lawyer, accountant, management consultant and former MBA coach at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University . Matthew practiced with Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Sydney , and was the Director (Know How and Online Products) for the firm.

 

He has spoken at conferences in Australia , London , Chicago and New York on topics of knowledge management and law firm management, and published articles in the United States , England and Australia on knowledge management and legal technology.

 

His academic background consists of degrees in accounting and in law from the University of New South Wales , Sydney , Australia . He has worked in professional services for almost 20 years, including with Price Waterhouse, Mallesons, Chubb Corporation, Allen Capital and The Weatherhead School of Management and Linklaters.

 

His interest in professional services firm management, and knowledge management as a way to increase knowledge worker productivity commenced in the 1980's at Price Waterhouse, and continued with Mallesons whilst practicing law as a mergers and acquisitions attorney. Following a period leading a startup venture for Chubb Corporation in Australasia , Matthew returned to Mallesons to work with the CEO and the Board on strategic projects, and was subequently appointed as the firm's first Director (Know How).

 

Matthew takes an innovative and yet pragmatic approach to knowledge management and legal technology, and is recognised for his strategic thinking skills and ability to analyze and communicate complex concepts simply. Matthew has a unique combination of legal, financial, technological and strategic competencies. Over the years Matthew has designed and programmed many computer applications including charity recording keeping, contact management, manufacturing aides, workflow, Notes databases, Access databases, dBase and Clipper databases, websites, online training, simulators and a range of utilities in VBA.

 

Matthew is the author of Effective Knowledge Management for Law Firms (2004) OUP and co-author of the blog, knowledgethoughts.com.

Juliet Humphries, Founder, Pierian Spring Consulting

 

Juliet is an experienced professional in knowledge and information management with 17 years practical experience. Juliet set up Pierian Spring Consulting in October 2004 and works with clients to develop and exploit their knowledge capabilities to support their business objectives. Juliet has worked with a wide range of law firms to assist them in developing and implementing their knowledge strategies. She has also worked with a number of firms on the development of the PSL role including advising on assessment and career development frameworks. She is currently writing “The Changing Role of the PSL?” which will be published by Ark later in the year.

 

Prior to setting up as a consultant, Juliet was Director of Knowledge at Linklaters with global responsibility for knowledge and information services. Juliet qualified and practiced as a corporate lawyer and became one of the first professional support lawyers in London in 1990. She has an MBA in Law Firm Management.

Juliet has written and spoken extensively on topics relating to knowledge and information management and has been actively involved in a number of working parties and research initiatives . Juliet is currently Chair of the Society for Computers and Law Knowledge Management Advisory Committee. Juliet is also on the Editorial Board of KM Legal.

Craig Carpenter, Vice President of Marketing and General Counsel , Recommind

 

Craig Carpenter, Vice President of Marketing and General Counsel, oversees all aspects of marketing at Recommind. Craig has extensive experience in the enterprise software, information security, and eDiscovery industries, and is a frequent speaker and panelist at industry events like the Wall Street Technology Association, ISSA, Interop, RSA Conference, CompTIA, Inbox, and Inbox/Outbox. Craig is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Francisco where he teaches graduate classes on high tech marketing, content management and digital rights management (DRM). 

 

Prior to Recommind, Craig was Senior Director of Corporate Marketing & Global Channels at Mirapoint, a leading messaging and information security vendor. Prior to Mirapoint, Craig was Senior Director, Field Marketing & Global Channels and acting General Counsel at Fortinet. Craig began his career as a corporate transactional and litigation attorney with Ropers, Majeski, et al, where he helped guide startups from formation through periods of rapid growth. Craig received his MBA and JD from Santa Clara University and his BA in history and political science from UCLA.

Felicity Badcock, Online Services Manager, Mallesons Stephen Jaques

 

Felicity is a senior lawyer and manager with more than 12 years of legal technology experience working in a variety of roles in leading commercial law firms in Australia and the United Kingdom . Felicity is a key member of Mallesons' knowledge and technology management group and is responsible for the firm's online services strategy. Felicity's background as a lawyer enables her to apply a deep understanding of legal practice to the delivery of business-focused knowledge and technology solutions. In recent years Felicity has been one of two senior executives behind Mallesons' move to electronic filing. The project has involved the creation of a market leading software package - Decisiv™ Email – which is sold by search software specialist Recommind.
